Cozumel, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan -- Mexico
Photo Essay by Ken Knezick
A few years back I had the pleasure of spending a week, and my birthday, in Cozumel, Mexico. To begin, I enjoyed some excellent scuba diving, with the mission of creating some new underwater wide-angle photos to show the current condition of Cozumel's reef system.
On the dive boat in the capable hands of Dive House, I was immediately struck with the gorgeous water colors as viewed from the surface, and the excellent visibility below. In addition to reconnecting with Cozumel's famous deep wall diving and coral reefs, I really enjoy diving and photographing the Felipe Xicotoancatl C-53 shipwreck. Intentionally sunk in 80 feet of water, just off Chancanaab Lagoon Park, this is an excellent and very photogenic wreck dive, easily accessible to sport divers.
Once the diving was done, our compadre Juan Leca owner of Dive House Cozumel took me on a 1,000 kilometer (600 mile) road trip. After riding the ferry over to Playa del Carmen, we drove north to Rio Lagartos on the Gulf of Mexico, and enjoyed a day on the river with the 40,000 flamingos that live there. Then we headed south through the interior of the Penninsula to Mahahual and the Costa Maya.
All in all it was a great trip, causing me to fall in love with Cozumel, and Mexico, all over again. So here's hoping you enjoy this Cozumel gallery, and that perhaps these photos will inspire you to return to dive Cozumel yourself. Yours in diving, Ken Knezick
