A NEW EXPERIENCE -- Eva and I just enjoyed a unique Cozumel experience that I'd like to share with you. After more than 60 visits to Cozumel, it's nice to know that I can still be surprised and very pleasantly pleased. Over the years, I've stayed in a very wide range of Cozumel lodgings, from inexpensive downtown hotels, to the finest of all-inclusive oceanfront resorts. But this was the first time I stayed at Condumel, Bill Horn's small efficiency suite set up just north of the town of San Miguel. Though wonderfully removed from all the hussle and bussle, Condumel is just a casual 10-minute walk back to all the dining, shopping, and nightlife of town.
OCEANFRONT SUITE -- Do you dream of an oceanfront room? The sun set over the sparkling sea just outside our floor to ceiling windows. We snorkeled and swam right in front of our room, and enjoyed pre-dinner cocktails in comfortable beach chairs with no other company than birds and fat iguanas. Would you appreciate the convenience of having your own fully-functional kitchen? Our Condumel suite included a full-sized refrigerator, four-burner stove, microwave, and coffee maker. After a visit to the huge Mega shopping market, we had plenty of beverages, fresh fruits, perfect avocados, and all the makings for great breakfasts, lunches and snacks.
GREAT DINING OPTIONS -- We dined out in the evenings, carefully selecting from Cozumel's great array of eateries. New finds were Restaurant Casa Mission, Pescaderia San Carlos, and Corazon Contento. The restaurant over the Museum downtown served us an excellent meal and an unsurpassed view over the harbor area. Cabana del Pescador, also called The Original Lobster House, provided as romantic, savory and memorable a dining experience as one could wish for. And all of this just scratches the surface of Cozumel's many interesting restaurants.
HANDS-ON MANAGEMENT -- We were quite impressed with Condumel's owner, manager, and staff. We felt very safe, and were warmly welcomed every time we returned from a foray into town. Our suite included an updated reference book of local information, including restaurant menus and maps of the island. For additional research, and simply staying in touch with home, there was good, free, Wi-Fi access. The bottom line is that Condumel is a finely-tuned operation and a great option for those interested in this multi-functional and wonderfully private type of lodging.
DO YOU LIKE TO BIKE? -- Do you enjoy bicycle riding? We do, and found it a great way to explore Cozumel "at ground level." One day we rode across the island and along the beautiful windward side of Cozumel. On another day we rode north to the end of the road where the boats cross to Isla de Pasion. There, at the site of the RAMSAR biological reserve, we were greeted by a trio of wild (and endangered) pygmy raccoons, endemic only to Cozumel. What fun! Should you care to do some riding, we found an excellent bike rental service that delivers good quality bikes right to your lodging. Their link is www.rentabikecozumel.com
COZUMEL SCUBA DIVING -- Of course, scuba diving was also on our menu. There are more than 130 different dive operations in Cozumel, and as you may imagine their quality can vary widely. So we again made use of the superior services of Juan Leca's Dive House. Thus we were assured of spacious, well-maintained boats with marine toilet, oxygen, radio and all emergency equipment, highly-experienced captain and crew, and excellent dive guides. Though I have dived Cozumel's reefs for more than 35 years, it is a still a joy to swim over the huge coral formations and visit with the wide variety of marine life.
THE BOTTOM LINE -- I'm fortunate to travel frequently, seeking out the world's best scuba diving opportunities. Yes, I love Indonesia, and I am continually impressed with the quality, value and wide-range of diving in the Philippines. But for something closer to home, comfortable, and just plain wonderful, Cozumel still excites and satisfies. And Condumel Condominiums proved to be an exceptionally fine way to enjoy this island paradise. I sincerely hope you can experience it for yourself! Ken Knezick - Island Dreams
